After 16 years, Abia Indigene Adighibe Wisdom Ikechukwu Emerges President of NIDSUG
After a keenly contested, free, and fair election among six candidates, Adighibe Wisdom Ikechukwu, an indigene of Obingwa Local Government Area in Abia State, emerged as the National President and the first Abia State indigene to hold this position.
The contestants include three persons from Akwa-Ibom State, two persons from Abia State, and one person from Cross River State. The position of the president was zoned to Zone C (Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River).
Along the line, two candidates from Akwa-Ibom dropped from the race. The election was held in Port Harcourt, at NUJ Secretariat [Nigeria Union of Journalists], Rivers State.
Each State produced 5 delegates, which made it a total of 45 from the nine states, and we have zonal Vice Presidents, West, Vice President East and Vice President North.
After the election, Adighibe Wisdom Ikechukwu scored the highest number of votes, 24 votes and was returned elected.
For the very first time in over 16 years [ Almost two (2) decades], a South-Eastern indigene from Abia State is emerging as the President of NIDSUG.


“I will attribute my success to the motivation I received from the effective education policies of His Excellency, Governor Alex Oti. My Governor is a democrat and I went into the election with the courage that what the Governor did in 2023 will repeat in NIDSUG.
“Going forward, my aim is to engage the NDDC, Governors of Niger Delta states, the Minister of Niger Delta, members of the National Assembly, Vice Chancellors and all stakeholders to advance the course of every single Niger Delta student in Nigeria”.
Niger Delta Students Union Government [NIDSUG] is the umbrella body of students of the Niger Delta. The members are students from nine (9) Niger Delta States of Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo and Rivers States. We equally have members from the diaspora schools of the Niger Delta origin.
NIDSUG was established to protect the interests of students, coordinating their activities and promoting educational development and the socio-political values of the region, and delivering efficient services by encouraging leadership and entrepreneurship trainings, skills acquisition, empowerment and scholarship schemes and supplementary educational methods aim at preparing them (Niger Delta Students) productively, positively, precisely for social impacts and community development, as well as aggressive pursuit of life dreams developments of Niger Delta as a whole.
The union was created in 2009 by the express request of the former president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria His Excellency Dr Goodluck E. Jonathan GCFR through the combined leadership of the Federal Ministry of the Niger Delta affairs and the Niger Delta Development Commission [NDDC] led by Chief Godday Orubebe and Chief [Dr.] TiImi Alaibe respectively to cater for the social responsibility of the Niger Delta students. It was on this basis that all the splintered student union groups were collapsed into a single one, now called the NIGER DELTA STUDENTS UNION GOVERMENT [NIDSUG].
