Just-In: Tinubu Signs Electoral Act 2026 into Law

President Bola Tinubu has officially signed the Electoral Act 2026 into law, following its passage by the Nigerian Senate after intense deliberations and a contentious debate over key provisions.

The upper chamber on Tuesday approved the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026, marking a significant overhaul of Nigeria’s electoral framework. The amendment reduced the mandatory notice period for general elections from 360 days to 300 days.

The amendment sparked heated debate among lawmakers, particularly over Clause 60 of the bill, which triggered a rowdy session during plenary. Proceedings were temporarily disrupted as senators exchanged sharp arguments on the implications of the provision.

Tensions escalated when Enyinnaya Abaribe (ADC, Abia South) demanded a formal division on Clause 60, insisting that votes be counted individually rather than decided by voice vote. The request intensified discussions on the floor before the Senate eventually proceeded with the legislative process.

Despite the disagreements, the bill was passed and subsequently assented to by President Tinubu, effectively repealing and re-enacting the 2022 Electoral Act.
