Just-In: ‘Alcohol Responsible for Banditry’ – NAFDAC DG Warns
The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, has stated that alcohol is responsible for banditry, road accidents, youth suicide and other societal challenges.

“In our country, Alcohol is responsible for bånditry. Excessive consumption also contributes to road accidents! dents, youth su!c!d£s, and others.”
Speaking on Wednesday, Prof. Adeyeye stated that alcohol abuse remains a significant contributor to insecurity and criminal activities in communities.
The NAFDAC boss whose agency began the enforcement of a ban on sachet alcohol warned that alcohol increases the risk of depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and addiction, describing it as an addictive substance with far-reaching consequences, particularly among young people.
Citing a study from recent assessments, she disclosed that minors are 41 per cent more likely to become dependent on alcohol when exposed at an early age.
According to her, studies further reveal that early alcohol use often serves as a gateway to the consumption of cocaine and other narcotics.
Prof. Adeyeye also highlighted the behavioural consequences of alcohol abuse, noting that violence remains a major factor in youth suicide, homicides and fatal road accidents. She added that risky behaviours associated with drinking frequently result in sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancies and other health complications.
On the academic front, she explained that alcohol consumption among students often leads to lower grades, missed classes and impaired cognitive function, ultimately affecting their long-term development.
