South East Will Benefit More Under Atiku’s Presidency – Senator Akobundu
Senator Austin Akobundu representing Abia Central has stated that the South East stands to gain considerably if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar wins the upcoming presidential election.

The Senator spoke shortly after the conclusion of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential primaries, held at Oloko Ward 1, Ahiaeke, in Ikwuano Local Government Area of Abia State, where party supporters turned out in large numbers to support Atiku’s presidential bid.
Addressing journalists after the event, Senator Akobundu expressed enthusiasm over the broad support shown by the people, describing it as a demonstration of love, trust, and confidence in the political direction championed by Atiku and his supporters.
“I’m confident already as we have already done a lot of grassroots mobilisation and I’m sure that Alhaji Atiku will win.”
He highlighted that Atiku remains one of Nigeria’s most experienced politicians, with profound knowledge of governance, national unity, and economic management qualities he said are urgently needed to reposition the country.
According to him, the former Vice President understands Nigeria’s challenges and possesses the political wisdom and national outlook necessary to restore stability and promote development across the federation.
Senator Akobundu noted that the South East would enjoy greater inclusion and opportunities under an Atiku-led administration, emphasising that the region needs a leader who values equity, fairness, and national integration.
“What is important to us as a Party is producing the President who has the capacity to transform the economy. Alhaji Atiku has promised, many times, that if the Party zones its ticket to the South East, he will support the person, but the ADC didn’t zone it, and we are going ahead. Just watch it, in time to come, zoning a party ticket will fizzle out.”
He recalled Atiku’s role during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, where he helped coordinate a strong economic team that drove reforms and economic growth in the country.
“As the Vice President of this country under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, he did extremely well. He assembled a team of economic experts and I know he will do extremely well to bring Nigeria out of these hardships.”
The senator further emphasised that the massive turnout recorded during the primaries was a clear indication that party members and supporters remain optimistic about Atiku’s chances and are prepared to mobilise support ahead of the general election.
He assured supporters that consultations and coalition-building efforts would continue across communities as the political process advances.
Alhaji Atiku Abubakar will be competing with former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi for the Party ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.
