Kwankwaso Confirms One-Term Agreement with Peter Obi, Says NDC Focused on Winning 2027

The vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has confirmed that there is an understanding between him and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, regarding Obi’s pledge to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television’s’Politics Today’ programme with Seun Okinbaloye on Monday, Kwankwaso said the agreement exists both within the party and personally between the two leaders.

“We are all gentlemen, even though we have agreed to put it even on paper. We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us,” he said while responding to questions about Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one term if elected Nigeria’s president.

Addressing speculation about his own political future and whether he intends to contest the presidency in 2031, Kwankwaso stated that the immediate priority is securing victory in the 2023 general election and implementing the party’s agenda.

“We are praying that all of us should see 2027 and, of course, 2031. We will look at the circumstances and see what can be done, but by the grace of God, I believe our party (NDC), and of course my humble self and His Excellency Peter Obi, have a short-term plan which we are executing now. Of course, we also have our medium and long-term plans for the country. That is what we are working on now,” he stated.

Kwankwaso also expressed satisfaction with his working relationship with Obi, describing their partnership as one built on teamwork and shared commitment.

“I am so happy that today I am working together with His Excellency Peter Obi, and we are comparing notes. We are working together. We are working as a team. We are happy with what we are doing,” he said.

On the preparedness of the party’s supporters, the former Kano State governor said the NDC enjoys the backing of committed supporters who are determined not only to cast their votes but also to safeguard the electoral process.

“Our supporters are not just merely people who are looking for money or who are looking for textile or food items on the day of election. These are people who are determined not only to vote but to make sure that the votes are being protected,” Kwankwaso said.
