Aguiyi-Ironsi Died for One Nigeria, Let’s Keep His Dream Alive – Dame Patience Jonathan

Former First Lady Patience Jonathan has called on Nigerians, particularly the people of Abia State and the South-East, to uphold the ideals of unity and patriotism championed by Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi.

Speaking at the 60th Memorial Anniversary of the late Head of State in Umuahia, Jonathan described the commemoration as a significant moment to honour a national hero whose sacrifice for the unity of Nigeria continues to inspire generations.

She thanked the Abia State Government for organising the memorial, noting that six decades after Aguiyi-Ironsi’s death, his contributions to national unity remain worthy of celebration.

The former First Lady reaffirmed her bond with Abia State, describing it as her home and assuring the people that she would always stand with them.

“Anytime you call me, I will come back home. This is my home. I belong to Abia State,” she declared.

Jonathan urged Nigerians to embrace the vision of one united nation, stressing that Aguiyi-Ironsi did not believe in tribal divisions but devoted his life to the cause of a united Nigeria.

She said all Nigerians have a responsibility to preserve that legacy by promoting peace, unity and national cohesion.

Reflecting on the sacrifices made by the late leader’s family, Jonathan paid glowing tribute to his widow, the late Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi, for her resilience after the assassination of her husband.

She said raising their children alone after the tragic loss required remarkable courage and commitment, adding that her dedication ensured the family’s legacy endured.

Jonathan urged Nigerians to also celebrate the sacrifices of the late Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi, describing her as a woman whose strength and steadfastness helped preserve the memory and ideals of her husband.

She prayed for God’s blessings upon all those gathered and called on Nigerians to remain united in building a stronger and more peaceful nation.
