Bourdex Unveils 5-Point Blueprint to Transform Abia North From Agriculture to Agribusiness

Successful telecom entrepreneur and candidate for the Labour Party Abia North Senatorial seat, Chief Dr. David Ogba Onuoha Bourdex, has offered a comprehensive diagnosis of the persistent poverty among rural farming communities in Abia North, revealing that decades of reliance on raw agricultural output, rather than value-added processing has trapped local farmers in economic hardship.

Speaking on the 5th episode of the weekly radio program, The Bourdex Hour, the frontline politician explained that while Abia North is endowed with fertile soil and industrious farmers, the region has historically mistaken simple agricultural production for true economic prosperity.

“The problem is that for too long we have mistaken agricultural production for agricultural prosperity,” Bourdex stated during the broadcast. “A farmer can work for months producing cassava, palm produce, cashew, vegetables, or fruits, only to sell them in their raw form. But the greater value is often created afterwards through processing, packaging, branding, storage, and distribution.”

Highlighting the untapped potential of crops natively grown across Abia North, Chief Bourdex pointed out that raw cassava can be converted into high-value commercial derivatives such as industrial starch, ethanol, animal feed, and refined flour. According to him, the post-harvest phase is where sustained employment and capital accumulation reside.

He warned against the continuous capital flight caused by selling raw farm produce at distressed prices during harvest seasons, arguing that localized processing centers and cold storage facilities would immediately eliminate post-harvest losses.

“Agriculture produces crops, agribusiness produces wealth. Farming is where the value chain begins; it should not be where it ends,” he emphasized. “Let us stop exporting our raw materials together with the jobs and opportunities that accompany them.”

Addressing the growing apathy among young people toward traditional farming, Bourdex urged a complete shift in public perception. He noted that modern 21st-century agriculture integrates artificial intelligence, drone technology, precision irrigation, digital marketing, packaging, and logistics.

He encouraged young graduates to view the sector through the lens of enterprise rather than manual labor, calling on educational institutions and government agencies to introduce tech-driven agribusiness curriculums.

Chief Bourdex also highlighted the strong connection between physical infrastructure and agricultural success, commending the Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti, for his massive investments in road networks across the state. He described these roads as critical economic infrastructure that seamlessly links rural farm gates to urban commercial centers.

To transition Abia North into an industrial agribusiness hub, Bourdex outlined five practical policy priorities:

Mapping Comparative Advantages: Identifying and capitalizing on specific crop strengths across different communities rather than imposing uniform programs.

Strengthening Cooperatives: Organizing farmers into transparent cooperatives for shared access to credit, heavy machinery, and market bargaining power.

Localized Processing Investments: Establishing processing plants directly adjacent to primary farming zones to process goods locally.

Youth Enterprise Development: Equipping young entrepreneurs with training in modern agtech, financial management, and export logistics.

Strategic Multi-Sector Partnerships: Fostering collaboration between government bodies, private investors, financial institutions, universities, and the diaspora.

Concluding the broadcast, Chief Bourdex assured constituents that if elected to represent Abia North at the National Assembly, he would utilize the senatorial office as an operational bridge connecting local communities to federal agencies, development finance institutions, and international investors.
