Peter Obi: I’ll Concede 2027 Election If It’s Free, Fair and Credible

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he will concede defeat in the 2027 presidential election if the process is free, fair and credible.

Obi, who spoke during an interview, said the choice of Nigeria’s next president should ultimately rest with the people, stressing that he would respect their decision if the election meets acceptable democratic standards.

“If the election is free, fair, and credible, I will. It’s the people who will decide who they want to serve them, and I will respect the will of the people,” Obi said.

However, when reminded that he did not concede the 2023 presidential election because he maintained that he won, the former Anambra State governor stood by his position.

“I did, and as long as I live, I will maintain that I won the 2023 presidential election,” he said.

Obi also vowed to tackle corruption in Nigeria’s fuel subsidy regime if elected president, saying his administration would remove what he described as corruption and criminality surrounding subsidy.

“I will fight and remove the corruption and criminality in subsidy,” he said.

The NDC candidate further promised to change the way Nigerian presidents spend their holidays, arguing that the country’s leaders should remain connected to the realities faced by citizens across the country.

According to him, a Nigerian president should spend vacations within the country and visit communities facing insecurity and other challenges.

“Nigerian president must spend his vacation in Nigeria. He should go on vacation in Zamfara, in Borno, in Anambra,” Obi said.

He added that, as president, he would visit northern Nigeria and identify with its people during important cultural and religious occasions.

“As president, I will go to Sokoto and spend Sallah with the Sultan,” he said.
