New Abia Movement Launches in Umuahia, Sparks Civic Renewal Across the State

The New Abia Movement (NAM) was officially inaugurated in a vibrant ceremony held at Umuahia, signalling the birth of a dynamic civic platform designed to inspire participatory governance, inclusive development, and grassroots empowerment in Abia State.

Led by renowned civil society activist, educationist, and community leader Comrade Zulu Ofoelue, NAM represents a values-driven coalition of citizens determined to shape the future of Abia through unified action and civic consciousness. With over 10,000 registered members and organised cells in all wards across the 17 local government areas of the state, the movement reflects unprecedented levels of public engagement.

The inauguration drew a wide range of state dignitaries and local government officials. In attendance were: Rev. Dr. Chris Nkata – Chairman, Abia North LGA, Mr. Ukoha Idika – Chairman, Ohafia LGA, Mr. Nwankwo Abali – Chairman, Arochukwu LGA, Pastor Chibuike Okonkwo – Chairman, Ugwunagbo LGA, Mr. Joachin Okwueze – Chairman, Aba North LGA, Chief KO Okechi – Chairman, Isikwuato LGA, Mr. Emeka Abengowe – Chairman, Aba South LGA, Mrs. Peace Onyeka – Abia State Woman Leader. Other state officers and representatives of local government councils were also present, affirming broad-based endorsement for the initiative.

NAM aims to:

• Promote Participatory Democracy: Encourage active citizen involvement in decision-making processes and governance.

• Advance Government Accountability: Campaign for transparent, responsive, and ethical leadership across Abia.

• Enhance Civic Education: Educate residents on rights, duties, and the power of community organising.

• Empower Youth and Women: Support initiatives that build leadership, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance.

• Promote Sustainable Development: Partner with communities to drive innovation, infrastructure, and social services.

• Strengthen Unity and Harmony: Champion values of inclusion, tolerance, and shared responsibility.

Speaking at the event, Comrade Zulu stated: “The New Abia Movement is a call to conscience, not a political party. We stand with the people, for the people, and by the people—guided only by truth, justice, and service.”

The ceremony ushers hope for each local government area and the collective hope for a brighter future.
