Sani Condemns Sowore’s Repeated Arrests and Detention

Shehu Sani, the former Senator representing Kaduna Central has condemned the incessant arrest and continued harassment of activist and journalist Omoyele Sowore by Nigerian security forces.

“The incessant arrest and gaoling of Sowore is unconscionable.”

Sani, a prominent human rights advocate, urged the Nigerian government to uphold Sowore’s constitutional rights to free speech and peaceful protest.

“If there is anything he says that is not true, it should be countered with alternative facts rather than resorting to arrests,” he said, describing Sowore as a “non-partisan and non-aligned vanguard” who speaks truth to power without fear or favoritism.

The senator’s comments come just hours after Sowore revealed on Wednesday that the Nigeria Police Force’s IGP Monitoring Unit had summoned him for questioning at 11:00 AM.

In a public statement, Sowore alleged that the police refused to disclose the petition that led to the summons, claiming the move was part of a broader effort to operate in secrecy under the directive of what he called the “illegal IGP,” Kayode Egberokun.

“Despite this, I will honour the invitation but not alone,” Sowore stated, calling on fellow activists, freedom fighters, and citizens of conscience to gather in solidarity at the police headquarters in Abuja.

Tensions escalated further Thursday morning when reports emerged that Sowore was forcibly removed from his detention cell by a special unit allegedly assembled by Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi and former SARS commander Akin Fakorede.

According to Sowore’s team, the activist was taken to an undisclosed location in what they describe as an “abduction-style operation.”
