Lawyer Inibehe Effiong Counters NYSC’s Claims on Withheld Certificate of Corps Member Ushie Rita

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has countered the statement issued by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) regarding the extension of service and withholding of the Certificate of National Service (CNS) of Corps Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye.

Responding on behalf of his client, Effiong stated that the NYSC’s explanation “does not represent the truth of the matter.”

He made the remarks in a brief statement posted on Sunday, indicating that he has been instructed by Ushie to take up the matter legally.

“The statement issued by the Management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on its decision to extend the service period, and withhold the Certificate of National Service of Corps Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye (alias Raye), does not represent the truth of the matter,” Effiong said.

He further added, “I have her instructions as her counsel to respond appropriately to the statement. History will vindicate the just.”

The NYSC had earlier issued a clarification denying allegations that Ushie was being punished for criticising the government. According to the scheme, her certificate was withheld due to failure to attend a mandatory biometrics clearance in April 2025, which led to a two-month extension of her service, a measure the NYSC described as standard procedure.
