Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has announced October 20, 2025, as the date for what he describes as a “historic” protest march to the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The demonstration, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, is aimed at demanding the immediate release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.
Making the announcement via social media, Sowore revealed that the march will begin at 7:00 AM.
He also alleged that the Presidency, through the Department of State Services (DSS), has been intimidating South-East politicians to dissuade them from endorsing or participating in the protest.
“The Presidency is using DSS to contact and threaten politicians from the Southeast, warning them not to endorse the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow movement or participate in the planned march,” Sowore wrote.
“They’ve contacted some names mentioned in my postings to gaslight them, claiming the protest was to foment chaos and violence. They’re terrified. However, we move forward and cannot be stopped.”
He further disclosed that he had spoken with Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, a vocal supporter of Kanu in the past. According to Sowore, Abaribe expressed full support for the movement and confirmed that the South-East caucus in the National Assembly had already met with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the National Security Adviser (NSA), though without achieving any concrete results.
“The time to act is NOW. Enough of the talk,” Sowore declared, rallying supporters to mobilise for the October 20 protest.
Nnamdi Kanu has remained in the custody of Nigerian authorities despite multiple court rulings ordering his release.
