Onanuga Criticises Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer for Joining Protest, Questions Ethical Conduct

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has criticised Aloy Ejimakor, one of the lead counsels representing detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, over his participation in a recent protest held in Abuja.

In a statement on Monday, Onanuga expressed dismay at seeing Ejimakor among a “small group of protesters” allegedly mobilised by activist and politician Omoyele Sowore. He described the demonstration as “shambolic” and accused Ejimakor of abandoning his professional responsibilities for extra-legal theatrics.

“As a lawyer, he should be aware of the principle of sub judice, particularly in relation to the ongoing treason case before the court,” Onanuga wrote. “The prosecution has concluded its case, and it is now incumbent upon Mr Ejimakor and the other lawyers to mount a strong defence for Kanu.”

Onanuga argued that rather than focusing on court proceedings, Ejimakor was aligning with what he described as a “career anarchist” in a bid to influence public opinion and judicial outcomes. He further questioned Ejimakor’s commitment to professional ethics, stating that legal authorities should consider disciplinary action.

“Ejimakor’s action questions his adherence to professional ethics. Legal authorities should consider appropriate sanctions for the unethical conduct of the bearded lawyer,” he added.

Meanwhile, Ejimakor and Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of Nnamdi Kanu were arrested earlier today during the protest in Abuja.

His handle tweeted; “We’ve just been arrested. Myself, Prince Emanuel and others. We are at FCT COMMAND CID. Myself, Fine Boy and others. No. 1 Zaria Street, Gariki 2, Abuja.”

The convener of the protest, Sowore, also stated that a new date for the #freemazinnamdikanunow protest will be released soon.
