Aguocha Questions Kanu’s Continued Detention, Calls for Fair Treatment of South-East

The lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Obi Aguocha, has raised concerns over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, questioning what he described as unequal treatment of the South-East in Nigeria’s justice system.

Speaking on Tuesday to journalists, Aguocha argued that if previous representatives had made even minimal efforts toward Kanu’s case, the current situation might have been different. He drew comparisons with Sunday Igboho, noting that prominent Yoruba leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had intervened in his case during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Why is Nnamdi Kanu still in detention? Why is nobody talking about it?” Aguocha asked, insisting that advocating for Kanu’s release was a central promise of his campaign. He said his position as a member of the House of Representatives has given him a platform to address what he sees as injustice against the Igbo people.

The lawmaker also revealed a personal connection to Kanu, stating that they attended the same primary and secondary schools.

According to him, he has been given a “sole mandate” by Kanu to speak on his behalf and push for his release, a responsibility he says he will continue to uphold despite political costs.

Aguocha further emphasised that his advocacy is rooted in representation and fairness, not affiliation with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). While clarifying that he is not a member of the group, he expressed support for what he described as the broader ideals of Biafra, particularly economic development and investment in the South-East.

He also commended efforts by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, to engage other South-East governors in seeking a political solution to Kanu’s case.
Beyond the issue of detention, Aguocha highlighted what he sees as systemic marginalisation of the South-East, pointing to perceived imbalances in the distribution of federal projects and infrastructure.

He called for greater inclusion, including the establishment of key institutions, improved rail networks, and the development of a seaport in the region.

“You cannot shortchange the South-East and expect electoral support,” he said, urging national leaders to address longstanding grievances and ensure equal opportunities for all regions.
