Tragic! Girl Commits Suicide After Being Forced to Marry

A tragedy unfolded in the Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State on Sunday evening when a young woman reportedly took her own life after being compelled by her father to marry one of his friends.

Sources indicate that the incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. The young woman, who had been under significant emotional distress, ended her life due to the pressure from her family to go through with the arranged marriage.

Bukar Fantami Gubio, a local child protection volunteer, confirmed the incident and described it as deeply unfortunate and heartbreaking. He noted that the deceased had previously expressed her unwillingness to marry the man chosen by her father, as she was in love with someone else.

“The emotional pain and pressure she experienced from this forced marriage drove her to take her own life. It is an unfortunate situation that calls for urgent action,” Gubio stated.

He urged human rights organisations, law enforcement agencies, and relevant authorities to investigate the incident and take immediate measures to ensure justice and prevent similar occurrences in the future. Gubio also appealed to parents and community leaders to respect the rights and choices of young women in marriage decisions, highlighting that forced marriages represent a significant violation of human rights.

“This tragedy serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect the rights, freedom, and dignity of young women against all forms of abuse and coercion,” he added.

As of the time of this report, neither the police nor the government of Borno State had officially commented on the incident.
