Akwa Ibom Governor Bans Masquerade Activities on Streets

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has issued an Executive Order prohibiting masquerade activities on streets and highways across the state.

The governor said the decision became necessary following recurring incidents of harassment, violence, and public disorder linked to such activities.

Governor Eno emphasised that while he fully respects cultural traditions, no cultural practice should threaten public safety or disrupt peace. He stated that anyone wishing to display masquerades must do so strictly within the village squares, not on public streets or in the community.

With thousands of visitors expected in the state during the Christmas season, the governor stressed the importance of maintaining a peaceful and orderly environment. He directed security agencies to enforce the order across all 31 local government areas.

Governor Eno reassured residents that the administration remains committed to promoting Akwa Ibom’s rich cultural heritage and tourism, but not at the expense of human safety or dignity.
