Senator Austin Akobundu, who represents Abia Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing persistent internal crises within the party.

In a resignation letter titled “Notice of Formal Resignation” dated March 10, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Oloko, Abia State, Akobundu announced that his decision takes immediate effect.

The lawmaker expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities it provided him to serve both the PDP and the country in various capacities. He described his relationship with the party as “mutually beneficial” and acknowledged the roles he was entrusted with during his time as a member.

However, Akobundu said the long-standing internal challenges facing the party played a key role in his decision to leave.

According to him, the “sad and seemingly intractable crises” that have plagued the PDP for years made it necessary for him to step away after extensive consultations with his associates and supporters.

NOTICE OF FORMAL RESIGNATION

It is with immense regret that I write to inform you of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.

I have taken time to reflect on my journey with the party and wish to appreciate the opportunities given me to serve in different strategic and critical capacities both in the party and the nation. No doubt, we have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship together.

However, at this time of our nation’s political evolution, the sad and seemingly intractable crises that have engulfed the Party for so long, and after wide consultations with my associates and supporters, it has become pertinent that I take the very painful but necessary decision to resign my membership of the party from today, 10th March, 2026.

I leave the party with my best wishes in service of our nation.

Thank you.

Senator Augustine O. Akobundu
