Abure-led LP Faction Dissolves Nenadi Usman Caretaker Committee

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party has dissolved the caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman, citing what it described as “incalculable damage” to the party.

The decision was announced in a statement issued by Alhaji Abdulrahim Imam Chindo, Secretary of the NEC Forum, following a virtual NEC meeting held on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

According to the statement, the meeting was attended by duly elected state chairmen and secretaries, alongside other key stakeholders of the party.

NEC members reviewed the activities of the caretaker committee and concluded that its actions since inception were unlawful and detrimental to the party’s stability. As a result, the council resolved to dissolve the committee with immediate effect.

The council also reaffirmed its confidence in the National Working Committee led by National Chairman, Julius Abure, whose leadership it said was validated at the party’s national convention held in March 2024 and reaffirmed at a subsequent NEC meeting in November 2025 monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

In addition, NEC mandated Abure and the party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, to pursue an appeal at the Court of Appeal seeking to overturn a Federal High Court judgment delivered by Justice Peter Lifu on January 21, 2026.

The council further directed the party leadership to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission to commence preparations for the conduct of primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, in line with the electoral timetable, once the court judgment is set aside.

NEC also nullified all prior notices issued to INEC by the dissolved caretaker committee, signalling a consolidation of authority under the Abure-led leadership as the party prepares for the next electoral cycle.
