Amnesty International Condemns Arrest of Man Who Chanted “No Water, No Light” During Governor’s Visit

Human rights organization Amnesty International has condemned the arrest of a 38-year-old man, Hamisu Abdullahi, by the Niger State Police Command after he reportedly shouted “no water, no light” during an official visit by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.

The incident occurred in Suleja following Eid-el-Fitr prayers, as the governor paid a visit to the Emir. According to reports, Abdullahi’s outcry drew the attention of security operatives, who subsequently arrested him on allegations of attempting to disrupt government activities.

Reacting to the development, Amnesty International described Abdullahi’s actions as a “brave, peaceful dissent,” stressing that no individual should be punished for speaking truth to power. The organization argued that instead of arresting him, authorities should have listened to his concerns.

The group further noted that the issues raised by Abdullahi lack of access to basic amenities such as electricity and water reflect the daily realities faced by many Nigerians.

While police authorities maintain that the arrest was necessary to prevent disruption during the governor’s visit, Amnesty International insists that any attempt to punish Abdullahi for exercising his right to freedom of expression must be dropped immediately, calling for more than just his release on bail.
