Obi Tackles Tinubu’s Failed 2023 Campaign Promise on Power Supply
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the state of electricity supply in Nigeria, referencing a campaign promise made ahead of the 2023 general elections.

In a statement on Saturday, Obi recalled Tinubu’s pledge to Nigerians that failure to deliver stable electricity within four years should disqualify him from seeking a second term.
According to Obi, the current realities of power generation and distribution fall short of that commitment.
He noted that when the current administration assumed office in 2023, Nigeria’s electricity generation stood at over 4,000 megawatts with relatively lower tariffs.
However, he claimed that the average supply has since dropped below that mark, while electricity costs for consumers have increased.
Obi further highlighted Nigeria’s low electricity consumption, stating that the country’s per capita usage is significantly below the African average. He cited figures suggesting that while Africa’s average consumption stands at about 617 kWh, Nigeria’s is approximately 144 kWh, placing it among the lowest on the continent.
The former Anambra State governor also referenced a recent remark allegedly made by President Tinubu during a brief visit to the Angwan Rukuba attack in Jos on April 2, 2026, where he mentioned that the Airport does not have electricity.
Obi described it as reflective of a disconnect between leadership and the daily struggles of Nigerians.
Obi criticised what he described as a pattern of unfulfilled promises and called for greater accountability in governance.
He urged Nigerians to support leadership that demonstrates both competence and empathy.
