Tinubu Hails Aguiyi-Ironsi as Symbol of Unity, Patriotism at 60th Memorial

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, as a symbol of patriotism, discipline and national unity whose legacy continues to inspire generations of Nigerians.

The President’s message was delivered by the Minister of Defense General Christopher Musa Rtd at the 60th Memorial Anniversary of the late military leader held at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Conference Centre, Umuahia, Abia State on Wednesday.

Speaking on behalf of the President, General Musa said Aguiyi-Ironsi’s military career was marked by extraordinary achievements, noting that he became the first Nigerian Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Battalion Commander, Brigadier General, Major General and the country’s first military Head of State.

He described the late leader as the “Unifier-in-Chief,” “Champion of National Integration,” “Pioneer of Indigenous Military Leadership,” and an advocate of one united Nigeria whose commitment to national cohesion remains relevant six decades after his death.

General Musa told the gathering that although he was not yet born when Aguiyi-Ironsi was killed, his generation continues to benefit from the sacrifices made by the former Head of State.

He said Aguiyi-Ironsi assumed leadership during one of Nigeria’s most difficult periods and remained committed to preserving the country’s unity, stability and institutional integrity despite the enormous challenges of the time.

According to the President’s representative, the Federal Government remains resolute in protecting Nigeria’s unity and strengthening institutions responsible for democracy, security and national development.

He noted that the values of patriotism, discipline, integrity, selfless service and national unity exemplified by Aguiyi-Ironsi continue to guide the Armed Forces and all Nigerians committed to building a stronger nation.

General Musa paid tribute to past and present members of the Armed Forces who sacrificed their lives in defence of Nigeria, assuring that their service and dedication would never be forgotten.

He commended the organisers of the memorial for preserving the memory of one of Nigeria’s foremost military leaders, saying such remembrance helps reinforce the nation’s history and shared values.

Delivering President Tinubu’s message to the Aguiyi-Ironsi family, he expressed the nation’s appreciation for the sacrifices made by the late Head of State in service to Nigeria and prayed that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

General Musa also praised Abia State Governor Alex Otti for what he described as exemplary leadership and visible development across the state, expressing optimism that the governor’s achievements would earn him a second term in office.

He further appealed to Governor Otti to immortalise both Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi and the late Lieutenant Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi by constructing a Unity Square in Abia State.

According to him, the proposed monument would commemorate the sacrifice of both military officers, recalling how Fajuyi refused to abandon Aguiyi-Ironsi during the July 1966 counter-coup, choosing instead to die alongside his guest in defence of honour, loyalty and national unity.

He said such a memorial would serve as a lasting reminder to future generations that Nigeria’s strength lies in unity and shared purpose.
