Otunba Senbanjo Celebrates Babangida at 85, Hails Former Head of State as Icon of Leadership and National Service
Otunba Dr Babatunde Olushola Senbanjo (BOS) has felicitated with former Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (GCFR), on the occasion of his 85th birthday, describing him as an icon of leadership, a statesman, mentor and an enduring symbol of national service.

In a birthday tribute issued to mark the milestone, Senbanjo joined Babangida’s family, friends, associates, admirers and well-wishers in celebrating what he described as a remarkable life and a significant chapter in Nigeria’s history.
According to him, Babangida’s 85th birthday is not merely a celebration of age but an opportunity to reflect on a journey defined by experience, resilience, leadership, courage, wisdom and service to the nation.
“At 85, you stand as a living repository of memories and experiences spanning some of the most significant periods in Nigeria’s modern history. Yours is a journey that has witnessed changing times, changing governments, changing generations and changing national aspirations,” Senbanjo said.
He noted that Babangida had witnessed some of Nigeria’s most challenging and hopeful moments, occupied one of the highest positions of responsibility in the country, interacted with leaders across generations and remained a figure of considerable historical significance.
Senbanjo said true leadership should not be measured solely by the positions an individual occupies, but also by the conversations they inspire, the lessons they leave behind, the people they mentor and the generations that continue to study their journey.
“That is why, Your Excellency, you remain an icon. Your name has become inseparable from discussions about Nigeria’s political and military history. Your tenure and decisions continue to be studied, discussed, debated and analysed. Beyond every historical account, however, one undeniable truth remains: you are a man whose life has been deeply intertwined with the story of Nigeria,” he stated.
The celebrant was also praised for his role as an elder statesman, mentor and repository of knowledge and experience for younger generations.
Senbanjo said the wisdom acquired through 85 years of life was invaluable, stressing that some lessons could only be learned through experience and living through history.
“There are lessons that cannot be found in books. Some experiences cannot be taught in classrooms. Some perspectives can only be acquired by living through history. And at 85, you possess an extraordinary reservoir of all three,” he said.
He urged younger Nigerians to learn from the experiences of previous generations, study the nation’s history, understand its mistakes, appreciate its achievements and use the lessons of the past to build a better future.
According to him, Babangida’s life demonstrates that leadership is a responsibility, history is a teacher, and the future belongs to those who are prepared to learn from yesterday.
Senbanjo further celebrated the former Head of State’s strength and resilience, describing 85 years of life as a monumental blessing and his continued relevance in Nigeria’s public consciousness as remarkable.
He expressed gratitude for Babangida’s years of service, experience and contributions to national discourse, while saluting his courage, intellectual depth, resilience and enduring place in Nigerian history.
He prayed that God would continue to preserve Babangida’s life and grant him many more years in sound health, peace, happiness, fulfilment and abundant grace.
“May your wisdom continue to illuminate the path of those who seek your counsel. May your remaining years be peaceful, purposeful, prosperous and filled with beautiful memories,” he added.
Senbanjo also prayed for a Nigeria where the experiences of its elders would guide younger generations towards building a more united, peaceful, prosperous and progressive nation.
“Your Excellency, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR, 85 years is a remarkable milestone. It is a celebration worthy of an icon, a moment worthy of reflection, gratitude and honour,” he said.
He described Babangida as “a soldier, a leader, a statesman, a mentor, an icon, a man of history and a legend of his generation,” while wishing him many more glorious years.
“May you live long. May you live well. May you live in peace. May you continue to enjoy God’s abundant grace. Happy 85th birthday, our great icon and elder statesman,” Senbanjo said.
