Police Arrest 30-Year-Old Man Over Alleged Murder of Girlfriend, Body Found in Toilet

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, over the alleged murder of his girlfriend, identified only as Chinyere, at his apartment in Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu.

The suspect was arrested on Sunday, September 21, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m. after neighbours reportedly discovered the decomposing remains of the woman concealed inside the toilet of his apartment.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly killed the woman on September 19 following an argument between them.

The Police said Emmanuel allegedly wrapped the victim’s remains in a nylon and locked them inside the toilet after the incident.

The decomposing body was reportedly discovered after an offensive odour began emanating from the apartment, prompting neighbours to force the door open. The suspect was allegedly apprehended by the angry neighbours before Police operatives attached to the Awkunanaw Division arrived and took him into custody.

The remains were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to establish the victim’s full identity and locate her relatives.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to the crime, claiming that the argument that preceded the incident was over allegations concerning who infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

He reportedly told investigators that he struck the woman on the head with a pestle during the argument, causing her death, before wrapping and concealing her remains in the toilet.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation into the incident.

The Police said the suspect would be arraigned in court upon completion of the investigation.

The Commissioner also urged members of the public, particularly young women, to exercise caution and ensure that trusted relatives or friends are informed of their movements when visiting or spending time with others.
