Tragedy Averted as Bus Carrying Corps Members Go Up in Flames

Tragedy was averted on Thursday, April 28, 2022, like a coaster bus carrying over 30 National Youth Service Corps members en route to Asaba, Delta State for their passing out parade ceremony busted into flames.

A video shared by activist Harrison Gwamnishu showed that the bus went up in flames a few minutes after it stopped at a filling station close to the Nigerian Navy Headquarters in Warri for refuelling.

It was gathered that the bus, belonging to the College of Education, Warri, was hired by the corps members to convey them to Asaba for their final POP after the completion of their service year.

One of the corps members who was affected by the incident was quoted by Grassroot reporters saying: “The driver stopped at a filling station close to Nigeria Navy Barracks in Warri to refuel the bus. While we were inside, and the filling station attendant was dispensing fuel into the bus, we heard a deafening sound, and everywhere was covered with smoke.”

In the shared video, fuel attendants were seen helping corps members out of the bus before the door was opened.

Meanwhile, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.
