Amnesty International Condemns Attacks on ADC Campaign Convoys in Kebbi

Amnesty International has strongly condemned attacks on campaign convoys of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi State on Thursday, November 5, 2026, describing the incident as part of a growing pattern of political violence targeting opposition parties across Nigeria.

The international human rights organisation said footage it analysed showed armed gangs attacking vehicles in the convoys, assaulting people with cutlasses and blocking roads during the campaign activities.

According to Amnesty International, one of the videos recorded in Argungu showed opposition supporters being pursued and severely beaten by suspected political thugs, while their vehicles were vandalised.

The organisation further alleged that the attackers used knives, machetes, bottles and stones against the convoy members, while also targeting journalists and other members of the media teams covering the campaign.

It said cameras and other media equipment were destroyed during the attacks.

Amnesty International described the incidents as a brutal campaign of repression against opposition parties and their supporters, warning that the growing violence was making it increasingly difficult for Nigerians to exercise their rights to freedom of association and peaceful assembly.

It noted that the Kebbi attacks occurred days after similar violent incidents disrupted ADC campaign activities in neighbouring Sokoto State.

The organisation said the incidents reflected a disturbing pattern of attacks against opposition members in different parts of the country, stressing that nobody should lose their life or suffer violence for participating in peaceful political activities.

Amnesty International also criticised Nigerian authorities for allegedly failing to ensure accountability for similar attacks previously recorded in states including Niger, Kaduna, Edo and Enugu.

It said investigations into the incidents showed that security agencies had failed to fulfil their responsibility to prevent or stop the attacks and protect citizens’ rights to freedom of association.

The organisation warned that continued political repression and violence against opposition parties across the country undermine democratic principles and create an atmosphere of fear and insecurity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
