ABSJPI: Lawyer Narrates How He Was Brutalized by the Police

At the second day of the Abia State Panel of Inquiry on police brutality, harassment and extrajudicial killing, a complainant and a legal practitioner, Alagbe Kalu Uche narrated how he was assaulted by the DPO of Isiukwuato Police Station, Asuquo Inyang Inyang Abia State.

The Complainant stated that he had gone to secure the release of his client Mr Chidi Ugorji who was detained over a family dispute on the 26th of July, 2020.

He was accused of recording the conference the DPO was having with his client and his kinsmen and assaulted by one Inspector Chukwudi Ihediwa, Grace Akpan, and the DPO, Asuquo Inyang Inyang of Isiukwuato police division and his phone’s memory card taken.

Kalu Uche stated that one of the Inspector Grace Akpan who had an artificial nails used it to scratch his face as they struggled and his clothes torn.

The prosecutor also stated that the case was reported to the Abia State Police headquarters whose personal assistant stated that ‘he was lucky to have escaped there and advised him to go home as that was one of the things seen in the line of duty.’
