The Abia State Government has entered into a landmark partnership with MTN Nigeria to launch the state into a full-fledged digital economy, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday, May 12, 2025.

Governor Alex Otti hosted the Group Managing Director and CEO of MTN Nigeria, Mr. Karl Toriola, who led a high-powered delegation to formalize the strategic collaboration aimed at digitally transforming Abia State through expanded broadband access, e-commerce, digital governance tools, and ICT-driven economic growth.

Speaking during the meeting, Governor Otti expressed gratitude to the MTN team for selecting Abia as a strategic digital hub. He emphasised that the partnership, conceived in 2023, aligns with his administration’s vision of using technology to empower youth, enhance governance, and boost socio-economic development.

Highlights of the MTN-Abia digital transformation plan include:

1. Statewide 3G broadband access as a minimum standard.
2. Provision of cloud computing and digital services for government operations.
3. Establishment of a digital marketplace for merchants in Aba, Umuahia, Ohafia, and other commercial hubs.
4. Launch of a device ownership scheme for civil servants to access smartphones, tablets, and laptops.
5. Deployment of 4G and 5G coverage in key cities across the state.

MTN also unveiled a fully developed e-commerce platform branded “Abia to the World Market Platform,” designed to enable Abia-based merchants to market and sell their products online at no cost.

Mr. Toriola praised Governor Otti’s commitment to digital transformation and pledged MTN’s full support to ensure successful execution of the partnership goals.

The event was attended by senior government officials, including Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, Secretary to the State Government Prof. Kenneth Kalu, and Chief of Staff Pastor Caleb Ajagba, Ph.D.

The initiative marks a significant step in positioning Abia State as a leading player in Nigeria’s digital economy.
