A tragic scene unfolded this morning at Akala Expressway in Ibadan as a secondary school student en route to sit for his WAEC examination was allegedly shot and killed by Nigerian police officers who were pursuing suspected internet fraudsters, commonly known as “yahoo boys.”

Eyewitness reports say the police were in hot pursuit of a vehicle when they began shooting at the tires, but in a horrifying twist, a bullet struck the student who was inside his father’s car, waiting at a zebra crossing, obeying the traffic light.

Popular broadcaster and human rights advocate, Oriyomi Hamzat, was reported to have arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to witness the aftermath and lend support to the grieving family.
At the time of filing this report, police authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
