Police operatives in Enugu have rescued and arrested a suspected armed robber from the hands of an irate mob, recovering a locally fabricated Beretta pistol during the operation.
According to a statement by the Enugu State Police Command Spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Anyanwu Izuchukwu Gabriel, was apprehended around 8 p.m. on June 8, 2025, by a combined team from the Independence Layout Police Division and the Anti-Cultism Squad, working in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch.
The arrest followed actionable intelligence that led operatives to the scene, where Gabriel was reportedly caught by the mob and subjected to severe beatings before police intervened.

The suspect, now receiving medical treatment due to injuries sustained, has confessed to being a member of the Black Axe Confraternity. His accomplices are said to have escaped, and police say a discreet investigation is underway to bring them to justice.
Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, commended the prompt and collaborative efforts of law enforcement and the local community. However, he issued a stern warning against mob justice, stating that such actions hinder proper investigations and due process in criminal cases.
