‘Why We Withheld Certificate of Corps Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye’ – NYSC Clarifies
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has refuted reports circulating on social media alleging that Corps Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye was denied her Certificate of National Service (CNS) due to her criticism of the government.
In an official statement released by the NYSC Management on Sunday, the scheme clarified that Rita, who bears State Code Number LA/24B/8325, is among 131 Corps Members whose certificates were withheld for disciplinary reasons.
The management stated that her service year was extended by two months for failing to attend the mandatory biometrics clearance in April 2025, under the NYSC Bye-Laws.
“Contrary to false claims that she was denied a Certificate of National Service (CNS) due to critical remarks about the government, this assertion is entirely unfounded and false in its entirety,” the statement read.
The NYSC emphasised that the extension of service is a standard disciplinary procedure and not unique to Rita’s case. It also reassured the public that the principle of equal treatment was upheld and that the matter should not be politicised.
“The NYSC Scheme remains committed to discharging its mandate, in line with the dictates of the constitution,” the statement added.
The NYSC urged the public to approach the situation with understanding, noting that extensions for non-compliance are a longstanding tradition within the scheme.
Corp member Ushie Rita became emotional in a viral video, expressing her frustration over the country’s economy and the stipend provided by the NYSC, which was insufficient to cover her basic needs. She faced criticism for what some viewed as ridiculing the scheme, while the Local Government Inspector (LGI) allegedly failed to conduct her mandatory biometric clearance, even though she was present on the designated day.
Subsequently, the corps members were paid N77,000 that month after several months of delay. However, during the Passing Out Parade (POP), Ushie’s certificate was withheld due to her failure to complete the biometric clearance in April.
Since then, activists like Omoyele Sowore have condemned the treatment of Ushie by NYSC management, arguing that her criticism of the Federal Government regarding the cost of living in Nigeria should not have led to such consequences.
