Abia Govt Announces Date for Mandatory Display of Waste Buckets

The Abia State Government has announced the mandatory display of waste bins in all commercial vehicles across the state, effective April 1, 2026.

This was made known by the Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu following this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti. He revealed that the decision is aimed at promoting proper waste disposal habits among commuters and strengthening the state’s environmental sanitation framework.

They added that it builds on the progress recorded by the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), whose sustained efforts have significantly improved cleanliness standards across the state once regarded as one of the dirtiest states in Nigeria.

The government also intensified monitoring and enforcement activities, sanctioning non-compliant businesses. Key interventions include the reclamation of the Amaiyi Amaogudu gully erosion site in Isuikwuato, flood control works at Elugwu Nkata in Umuahia North, and erosion control projects in Oro-Ibere, Ikwuano Local Government Area.

These efforts underscore the administration’s commitment to tackling environmental degradation and safeguarding communities.

ASEPA is also advancing sustainable waste management through innovative partnerships focused on converting waste into useful resources. Ongoing initiatives include plastic recycling operations in Aba and along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, with plans underway to expand into converting organic waste into diesel and other hydrocarbon products.

Residents have been urged to support these efforts by avoiding indiscriminate dumping and using designated waste disposal points.
