ASUU Shuts Down Abia State University, Declares Indefinite Strike Over Unimplemented Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abia State University (ABSU) Chapter, Uturu, has declared a total and indefinite strike, accusing the university management of failing to implement the 2025 agreement reached between the union and the Federal Government.

The union announced the industrial action on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, in a statement signed by the branch Chairman, Dr Chidi S. Mba, and Secretary, Dr Victor U. Obisike, and made available to journalists in Umuahia.

According to the union, the decision followed the failure of the Abia State Government and the management of ABSU to implement provisions of the agreement signed between ASUU and the Federal Government on December 23, 2025, which was scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026.

ASUU said it had engaged the state government and university management on several occasions over the outstanding issues, including formally presenting the agreement and subsequently issuing a 21-day ultimatum.

The union, however, said there had been no meaningful response to its demands, leaving it with no option but to commence an indefinite strike.

In a notice titled, “Notice to All ASUU–ABSU Members,” the union directed its members to withdraw their services completely with immediate effect.

The statement read in part: “The ASUU–ABSU Branch hereby informs all members that the Branch has commenced a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action with effect from today, Tuesday, 11th August 2026.”

The union further directed members to comply fully with the strike directive and remain united in pursuing what it described as outstanding welfare and institutional demands.

It specifically instructed members not to attend any statutory meetings, including Senate meetings and Faculty Board meetings, among others.

“Remember no attendance to any form of statutory meetings of any sort including Senate meetings, Faculty Boards etc,” the statement added.

ASUU said further directives and updates would be communicated to members as developments unfold.
