Citizens have trooped to the Enugu State House of Assembly in protest over a lifetime pension for ex-governors which have scaled its first reading.

The protest happened on Tuesday morning with the youths insisting that workers in the State are not being paid while ex-governors are provided lifetime pension.

The member representing Udenu State Constituency at the State Legislature, Ikechukwu Ezegwu, who sponsored the bill called for calm with the protesters stating that the House will look at the public outcry over the bill.

In a statement he signed yesterday, he said; “Enugu State House of Assembly remains committed to the discharge of its duties. The House is also sensitive to the feelings of the people and therefore appreciates the feedback and reactions from the constituents and the public. This is the beauty of democracy and as representatives; we will not disappoint the people.

“Enugu State of Assembly, therefore, assures the people that the House will follow due process and do the needful during the next plenary.”

The bill seeks to provide life pension for ex-governors and their deputies in the state.

The executive bill tagged, ‘Enugu State Gubernatorial Pensions Bill 2021’, covers all former governors, their deputies and spouses.

Recall that Lagos and Kwara State are proposing to remove the bill which pays ex-governors in the State.
