“He Helped Me Serve Faithfully” – Obi Pays Tribute to Igwe Achebe at 85th Birthday Celebration
The Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress NDC, Peter Obi, has paid glowing tribute to His Royal Majesty, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, describing him as one of the key figures who helped him serve Anambra State faithfully during his tenure as governor.

Speaking at the 85th birthday celebration of the revered monarch and Obi of Onitsha at Delborough Lagos, Obi recalled the crucial role Igwe Achebe played as Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council while he was governor.
According to Obi, before he assumed office, the traditional rulers’ council comprised individuals whose backgrounds and legitimacy were often questioned. Upon becoming governor, he dissolved the existing council and appointed Igwe Achebe, popularly known as Agbogidi, as chairman, a move he said restored credibility and attracted respected personalities to the body, including Professor Ike Ekwueme.
Reflecting on the decision, Obi revealed that some individuals had cautioned him that members of the reconstituted council would oppose his administration and create challenges for him. However, he said the fears proved unfounded, noting that the traditional rulers worked with him in the interest of the state.
He humorously recalled how some of the traditional rulers would often tell him in Igbo, “Nwatakịrị a anaghị anụ ihe” (This boy does not listen), in reference to his firm approach to governance.
Obi expressed gratitude to Igwe Achebe for his support and leadership over the years and offered prayers for the monarch’s continued good health and strength.
“May God continue to guide and strengthen you,” Obi said as he joined family members, dignitaries, traditional rulers, and well-wishers in celebrating the monarch’s milestone 85th birthday.
The event attracted prominent personalities, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Musician Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, and other notable individuals.
