Obi Visits Plateau IDP Camp, Donates to Over 500 Displaced Persons

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has visited an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, where he interacted with displaced residents and provided financial support to more than 500 victims of attacks.

Obi, who arrived in Jos, Plateau State, for an official engagement, visited the camp as part of his ongoing outreach to communities affected by insecurity and attacks.

Speaking to the displaced residents on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor expressed sadness over their living conditions, stressing that Nigerians should not be forced to remain in IDP camps because of insecurity.

“We are here with a deep sense of pain. As long as you are in an IDP camp, Nigerians are still in IDP camps. You are not supposed to be here,” Obi said.

He called on the Federal Government to take decisive action to end killings and attacks in Plateau State and other parts of the country.

According to him, while prayers are important, the government must deploy practical measures to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attacks.

“Yes, we need prayers, but these problems can be solved by the government. The people carrying out these atrocities are not from the moon. The government should deal with them,” he said.

Obi also urged other presidential candidates to visit IDP camps across the country and personally interact with displaced Nigerians.

The NDC candidate said he was deeply moved upon arriving at the camp and seeing the displaced residents dancing and remaining hopeful despite the difficult circumstances they face.

The visit came after Obi’s earlier movement to Benue State, where he said his convoy was blocked while he was on his way to visit and condole with families affected by a deadly attack.

Obi described the situation in Benue as “very worrisome,” saying reports indicated that more than 270 people had been killed in the affected community.

“I feel that since we are starting our campaign, I should go around, visit and condole with the families, and support them financially,” he said.

He explained that his visits were aimed at expressing solidarity with victims, offering condolences to bereaved families and providing financial assistance where possible.

Meanwhile, the camp houses more than 45,000 displaced families.
