Capacity. Experience. Proven Track Record.

By Prince Kelechi Prico (CNA)

The choice of who represents Abia Central Senatorial District in 2027 should be determined by competence, experience and a proven record of service. It is about choosing someone who understands the legislative process, has delivered results in the past and possesses the capacity to do even more.

That man is Rep. Emeka Atuma (KABILA), the preferred candidate for the Abia Central Senate seat.

WHO IS REP. EMEKA ATUMA?

Rep. Emeka Atuma is a Nigerian politician, businessman and former member of the House of Representatives, where he represented Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency from 2003 to 2007.

Before venturing into partisan politics, he had established himself as a successful businessman with interests in construction, real estate and energy.

In his words: “I was already established before joining politics. I came to serve, not to enrich myself.”

HIS NATIONAL CAUCUS AND LEGISLATIVE ANTECEDENTS

Between 2003 and 2007, Rep. Atuma served as:

– Member of the House of Representatives, representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency.
– Chairman, House Committee on Environment and Ecological Matters.

As committee chairman, he championed and sponsored two major legislative initiatives that led to the establishment of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA). These federal agencies play important roles in protecting Nigeria’s environment.

His legislative contributions were also highlighted by more than 1,000 Ikwuano/Umuahia women leaders in their October 2026 communiqué.

Atuma is a leading stakeholder of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the party’s senatorial candidate for Abia Central in the 2027 general elections.

In December 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed him Chairman of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), a recognition of his capacity and national relevance. However, in what his supporters describe as a demonstration of political commitment and loyalty to the APC, Atuma reportedly relinquished the appointment to pursue his 2027 senatorial ambition.

He had earlier contested for the Abia Central Senate seat under the APC in 2023.

HIS ACHIEVEMENTS THAT PEOPLE STILL SEE AND FEEL (2003–2007)

1. Legislative Reforms

His contributions to the legislative processes that established NOSDRA and NESREA remain among his major national legacies.

2. Infrastructure Development

He facilitated rural road construction, school infrastructure, water projects and rural electrification across Ikwuano and Umuahia.

3. Human Capital Development

He facilitated federal civil service employment opportunities for several Abia youths. Nearly two decades later, many of the beneficiaries have reportedly risen through the ranks to become Assistant Directors and Deputy Directors.

4. Philanthropy Through Atuma Grace Movement (AGM)

Through the Atuma Grace Movement, he has sustained empowerment initiatives, youth engagement, skills acquisition programmes and community support activities.

RECOGNITION AND POLITICAL APPEAL

Rep. Emeka Atuma enjoys several recognitions and political support across Abia Central.

– KABILA and The Preferred: He is popularly known by these names among his supporters across the district.

– Ihie Ukwu Ohuhu: He received this prestigious chieftaincy title from Ohuhu traditional rulers in Umuahia North in September 2026.

– Women’s Endorsement: More than 1,000 Ikwuano/Umuahia women leaders endorsed him as their preferred candidate for Abia Central in October 2026 at Jubilee Arena, Umuahia.

-Growing Political Support: His ward-to-ward tour of Osisioma Ngwa in October 2026 reportedly attracted defections from the PDP, Labour Party and ADC.

-Bridge-Building Leadership: He is described by his supporters as a calm, humble and accessible leader with the ability to build bridges between the Ikwuano/Umuahia and Umunneato Ngwa blocs.

1. Proven Legislative Experience

Atuma will bring previous legislative experience to the Senate rather than having to learn the ropes from scratch.

2. Laws That Still Work

Few political representatives can point to legislative contributions connected to the establishment of federal agencies. Atuma’s supporters consider this one of his strongest credentials.

3. Permanent Employment Opportunities, Not Temporary Handouts

His approach to empowerment emphasises sustainable opportunities, including federal civil service employment that can provide beneficiaries with decades of career progression.

4. Stronger Links with the Federal Government

As an APC senator, he could leverage his political connections to attract federal projects and interventions through the South East Development Commission and the Renewed Hope Agenda.

5. Equity and Political Balance

His supporters believe he understands the need to respect the political understanding and balance between the two major blocs in Abia Central.

6. A Business-Oriented Approach to Governance

His experience and political connections could help attract road construction, electricity projects, scholarships and other development initiatives to the district.

10. Commitment to Trust and Service

His supporters believe his background and previous public service demonstrate a commitment to serving the people rather than using public office for personal enrichment.

THE CHOICE BEFORE ABIA CENTRAL

Abia Central needs a strong and effective voice in the National Assembly; a representative who can articulate the interests of the people in Abuja, command respect at home and build confidence across the district.
