The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has suspended its Abia State Chairman, Mr. Don Norman Obinna, following allegations of misconduct, high-handedness, and disregard for party principles.

The suspension was announced during a harmonisation meeting held on Friday at the Nobik International Event Centre in Aba, where party stakeholders and factions gathered to unify the party’s structure across the state.

Mr. C.C. John, the party’s Deputy Social/Welfare Secretary, had petitioned the leadership, accusing Don Norman of authoritarian leadership and mismanagement of party property, including the alleged sale of two party vehicles.

Moderating the meeting, the National Welfare Secretary, Nkem Ukandu, stated that the purpose of the meeting was mainly to harmonise the party in the State, settle disputes and make sure that positions are aligned to push the Party and the coalition forward. He stated that the repositioning of the Party is paramount and urged all members to engage with the people at the grassroots to join the Party.

“What we want is for everyone to join the Party so tell the people around you to be a member of our great party. Our party now has the highest past and present elected members in the State so let’s join hands to make sure that it is a party we can be proud of.”

Addressing the press, the Deputy Chairman, Mazi Okoroafor Kanu, who chaired the meeting in the absence of the Suspended Chairman, explained the reasons behind the suspension.

“He ran the party like his personal business,” Kanu said. “He refused to recognise the party executive or committee members. Even in meetings, he would dismiss the opinions of others and impose his decisions. The party decided enough is enough.”

Kanu also claimed that Norman’s actions alienated potential members and prevented the party from growing within the state.

“In the past, people could be suspended simply for disagreeing with him,” he added. “Now the party is open to everyone. We are restructuring to ensure inclusiveness and growth.”

A disciplinary committee, chaired by Mazi Kanu, has been set up to investigate the allegations. Don Norman has been invited to appear before the committee to respond to the charges.

Meanwhile, the ADC leadership gave the disciplinary committee 14 days to turn in their report.

The event was attended by notable political figures including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South), Etigwe Uwa SAN, Uwaoma Olewengwa, Zonal Legal Adviser Barr Kalu Kalu Agu, Prof Onyi Nwagbara, and other stakeholders.

The harmonisation meeting marks a new chapter for the ADC in Abia, as the party works to rebuild trust and reposition itself ahead of 2027.
