NUPENG Calls Off Nationwide Strike as Dangote Refinery Agrees to Unionisation
The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has officially suspended its nationwide strike following a landmark agreement with Dangote Refinery to allow the unionisation of its workers.

The breakthrough came after a high-level meeting involving representatives of the Federal Government, Organised Labour, and the Dangote Group. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the end of the talks, outlining key commitments to protect workers’ rights and begin the unionisation process immediately.
According to the MoU, the unionisation of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals workers will commence on September 9 and is expected to be completed by September 22, 2025. The agreement also explicitly states that the employer will not create or sponsor any rival union and assures that no employee will face victimisation as a result of union activities.
All parties agreed to report back to the Minister of Labour in two weeks with an update on the level of implementation of the MoU.
