The Abia State Government has commenced the pilot phase of its Electric Vehicle (EV) Mass Transit Bus Service, with four buses deployed to provide free intra-city transportation beginning Wednesday, December 24, 2025.

The rollout fulfils the promise made by Governor Alex Otti during the handover ceremony of the Mass Transit buses. Under the pilot scheme, two buses have been assigned to Umuahia, while the remaining two will operate within Aba.

In Umuahia, the buses will ply the following routes: Isi-Gate to Ubakala, and Okpara Square to Express Tower. In Aba, the designated routes are Osisioma to Park, and Park to Ala-Oji through Port Harcourt Road.

In addition to intra-city services, the Mass Transit buses have also commenced free inter-city operations, with two daily trips running from Umuahia to Aba and returning to Umuahia.

Each bus is staffed with a pilot and a co-pilot to ensure smooth operations. Commuters will be attended to on a first-come, first-served basis and are advised to comply with instructions from the bus crew to ensure a safe and pleasant travel experience.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, described the initiative as a learning process for all stakeholders involved, noting that some challenges may arise at this early stage of implementation.

He appealed to residents for patience, understanding, and support as the state introduces a new era of public transportation.
