The Niger Delta Commission has condemned in strong terms the attempted impeachment of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara stating that it was troubling and capable of igniting social unrest in the State.
Speaking on Monday, in a statement signed by the National Spokesperson of the NDC, Mudiaga Ogboru, pointed out that the impeachment lacks justification and revealed that the last gubernatorial election was polarized by ethnic sentiments among competing groups which if it begins, will pose a threat to peace and unity.
It urged stakeholders to prioritize dialogue to address any issue as the people of Rivers State had given their mandate to Governor Fubara to ensure continued peace and stability for the residents and indigenes of the State.
The NDC warned that any attempt to remove Governor Fubara must be justified, seen as justified, and must follow the Constitutional procedure while upholding the principles of democracy.
It emphasized the need to respect the will of the people and respect the institutions of democracy in the State.
24 House Members who were believed to be loyal to Former Governor Nyesom Wike have moved to impeach Governor Fubara, a motion which the Fubara’s loyalists opposed and protested.
The anti-Fubara lawmakers led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule directed the clerk of the House to serve an impeachment notice to the Governor.
However, Governor Fubara questioned the lawmakers on its reason for impeachment stating that he would not be the first to be impeached.
“Let it be on record; whoever masterminded the attack at the Assembly is trying to divert attention.
“If Siminalayi Fubara is impeached, I won’t be the first, neither will I be the last. But what is important is that any attempt that is not justified will be resisted.
“Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offense that I have committed to warrant impeachment.
“I can go home and sleep. Let me assure Rivers people that we will continue to defend them, protect you people, and ensure that they will enjoy the dividends of democracy.”
