FG Approves ₦145 Billion for Electrification Projects in UNILAG, ABU, and Six Other Institutions
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a total of ₦145 billion to fund electrification projects across eight federal universities and one teaching hospital in Nigeria. The move is aimed at transforming the energy infrastructure of tertiary institutions and boosting access to reliable power.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, following the weekly FEC meeting in Abuja.
According to Adelabu, the initiative represents a strategic shift toward sustainable energy solutions, with the goal of reducing dependence on the national grid and costly diesel generators. He emphasized that the projects would support learning, research, and healthcare services by delivering clean, stable, and cost-effective electricity.
“This is a major milestone in the transformation of our tertiary education infrastructure,” Adelabu stated. “It will significantly lower energy costs, reduce reliance on diesel generators, and provide a clean, stable source of power to support learning, research, and healthcare delivery.”
The institutions selected for the electrification initiative include:
University of Lagos (UNILAG)
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife
University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
University of Ibadan (UI)
University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan
Federal University, Wukari (Taraba State)
One additional federal university (not named in the announcement)
In addition to the ₦145 billion university electrification project, the FEC also approved ₦68.7 billion for the provision of solar power to rural communities and agricultural clusters that are not currently connected to the national grid.
