IGP Orders Review of Amnesty Report on South-East Which Accuses Police of Extrajudicial Killings
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered a comprehensive institutional review of a recent report by Amnesty International, which accuses the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies of extrajudicial killings and human rights abuses in the South-East region.

The 128-page report, titled “A Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in South-East Nigeria,” alleges a consistent pattern of rights violations by law enforcement agencies over ten years.
In response, the IGP instructed relevant police departments and field formations to conduct a meticulous, line-by-line analysis of the report. The review process, according to a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, will include cross-referencing the allegations with internal operational records, field intelligence, and situation reports from commands in the region.
While reaffirming the Force’s commitment to human rights, transparency, and accountability, the IGP noted that past reports by Amnesty International have sometimes contained inaccuracies and generalisations. He stressed that the current review would be guided strictly by verifiable evidence and a commitment to institutional integrity.
The review’s outcome will be a detailed and evidence-based response addressing the specific claims made by the rights group. The IGP emphasised that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to lawful and rights-based policing, with ongoing efforts to strengthen internal accountability, improve human rights training, and implement reforms aligned with global best practices.
Furthermore, the Force expressed its willingness to engage constructively with civil society organisations, international partners, and the National Human Rights Commission. The IGP called on all stakeholders to approach the situation with objectivity and an understanding of Nigeria’s complex security landscape.
