Fulani Herdsmen Attack Family in Avodim Community, Abia

The victim, Adaobi Ibegbu, told security personnel that as they were opening the gate of their farm, they heard noises from behind one of the trees and turned around. They spotted herdsmen who attacked them and ordered them to lie down.

“We came to the farm this morning but heard a noise from behind one of the trees, which turned out to be herdsmen. They told us to lie down, and my husband said we would. As we tried to comply, three more herdsmen joined the first group. At that point, we ran into the farm, and my husband pushed the gate to lock it. We ran to the far end of the farm, and while we were there, one of them jumped the high fence into the farm and told me to fetch my husband. I didn’t even know he had left to seek help. We pleaded with them not to kill us, as they were armed with cutlasses and guns. Another jumped the fence and ordered another to shoot us as we begged. They told me to open the gate, but I told them I didn’t have the key. They seized my son and attempted to take him through the fence. I pushed him, causing them to fall, while my son cried. They realised my husband had gone to seek help, so they jumped the fence and left.”

While speaking, her husband explained that he had to escape through the back fence to get help and was able to contact the Vigilance Service, who responded immediately to rescue the family.

The personnel assured the family of their support and security, emphasising that the agency exists to serve the people.
