Death of Family of Five: No Foul Play – Police Say

The Anambra State Police Command has said there was no foul play following the death of a family of five who packed into a new building on the 17th of July, 2023 at a bungalow at Oze Village, Nkwelle Ezunaka.

The family, Ifeanyi Okoh, 32-year-old from Akebugu, Enugu State; his wife Chiamaka Okoh, 28 years old, two of their children, Chinecherem Okoh, 3 Years, and Catherine Okoh, 2 Years as well as the mother of the wife, Anthonia Onwukube aged 56 years was discovered dead on the first day they moved into the building.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga on Friday revealed a generator connected to the house’s electricity grid and kept in a confined space without proper ventilation.

However, an autopsy conducted revealed the cause of death to be carbon monoxide poisoning.

“They were killed by fumes from the generator.”

While commiserating with the bereaved family, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye advised the public on the dangers of operating generators indoors as carbon monoxide which is emitted in the fume is a deadly gas that has wiped out several families due to ignorance.

“Generators are to be kept in well-ventilated spaces while in use. He assures that the Command will continuously sensitize the public to domestic hazards that may claim life to reduce such unnecessary and avoidable deaths,” he says.
