The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized counterfeit packaging materials for alcoholic beverages and other consumer products estimated at over ₦200 million in Aba, Abia State.

The seizure followed a raid conducted by the Agency’s Investigation and Enforcement operatives on five shops at Old Court Road Market, Aba, based on credible intelligence concerning the production and distribution of counterfeit packaging materials.

During the operation, NAFDAC uncovered large quantities of counterfeit labels, corks, packs and outer packaging materials bearing the names of several popular brands, including Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, Lord’s Dry Gin, Imperial Blue, Goya Oil, Chelsea, Squadron and Seaman’s Aromatic Schnapps.

The Agency said its operatives encountered threats and resistance from some traders during the operation, making the evacuation of the seized materials challenging.

The owners of the five affected shops were reportedly absent when the enforcement team arrived. Consequently, NAFDAC placed the premises on hold to prevent unauthorised access or interference with the materials and items remaining inside.

The Agency also invited the Market Union Chairman, who pledged to ensure the security of the sealed premises and assist NAFDAC in identifying and presenting the owners of the shops for further investigation.
