Three suspects have been arrested for the brutal murder of Mr. Adeniyi Sanni, the aide to Senator Solomon Adeola, by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command after weeks of investigation.
The suspects, 43-year-old Fred Azeez Okunnu, 33-year-old ld Lucky Idudu Michael, and 26-year-old Adedigba Segun were arrested weeks after they shot dead the victim on his way home and dumped his corpse close to a military barrack around Toyota bus stop in Oshodi, Lagos in the August 5 robbery.
It was gathered that the gang dressed as military personnel to deceive their victims but when the deceased discovered their antics, a violent confrontation ensued which led to Mr. Sanni’s tragic death.
“In this incident, after seeing the papers, they insisted on taking the victim to their base. Once they entered the vehicle, it dawned on Mr Sanni that they were robbers,” Idowu Owohunwa, the police commissioner, told journalists on Monday.
Investigations also revealed that the gang was armed by one Alhaji who is based in Benin Republic and they specialize in robbing motorists of their unregistered vehicles.
“Further investigation has revealed that the said Alhaji has other cells operating across the country,” Mr Owohunwa said.
“Being a transnational crime, the Command is involving the Interpol for the apprehension of this criminal receiver and financier.”
“The spotter then calls his gang members who are dressed in military fatigues and stationed somewhere around Berger bus stop to inform them of the approaching vehicle,” he said.
“Once they stop their victim, they request for the vehicle custom papers, as they would need to clear security and customs checks.”
Among the items recovered were firearms and military gear used by the gang.
