Insecurity in Nigeria: Setting the Record Straight – Otunba Babatunde Olushola Senbanjo

It is both unfortunate and misleading for Senator Adams Oshiomhole to attempt to rewrite Nigeria’s history by claiming that the current insecurity ravaging the nation began under former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Such a statement not only distorts facts but also seeks to divert attention from the failures of the ruling APC government in addressing the worsening security situation facing Nigerians today.

Nigeria’s security challenges have evolved over decades and cannot be blamed on one individual or administration. While every government bears some responsibility for the challenges of its era, it is important to acknowledge that the APC came to power in 2015 largely on the promise of ending insecurity, defeating terrorism, and restoring public confidence in national security institutions.

More than a decade after making those promises, Nigerians continue to witness alarming levels of banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery, communal clashes, and attacks on communities across the country. Thousands of lives have been lost, businesses destroyed, and many citizens have been displaced from their homes. Farmers are unable to access their farmlands safely, resulting in food insecurity and rising hunger across the nation.

Rather than engaging in blame games and political finger-pointing, leaders should focus on providing practical solutions to the challenges confronting Nigerians. The reality is that ordinary citizens are more concerned about their safety, economic well-being, and future prospects than about political narratives designed to score partisan points.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole and the APC owe Nigerians honest explanations regarding the security situation after years of being in power. Nigerians deserve accountability, transparency, and measurable results. The question is not who to blame for the origins of insecurity, but what has been done to effectively address it despite repeated promises and significant resources allocated to security agencies.

History will judge leaders not by the excuses they make or the opponents they blame, but by their ability to solve problems and improve the lives of the people they serve. Nigerians are tired of political rhetoric. They demand action, leadership, and concrete solutions to the insecurity that continues to threaten the unity, stability, and prosperity of the nation.

The time has come for political leaders to rise above partisan interests and work collectively toward building a safer, stronger, and more secure Nigeria for all.
