I joined other publishers on the third day of Citizen Quest to tour the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, projects done in Abia State.
It was most pleasant to see that some roads were done exceedingly well while others were done without considering the citizens who ply on this road.
Firstly, at Nkpa road in Bende L.G.A., as far as the (Nkpa Ukwa – Agbayi – Odua) Amaegbuato Road which is 2 phases and the Major Nkpa – Ofeme Road goes, it was most unfortunate to see that the road has started giving way. This means that in less than six months if care is not taken, there would be a massive breakage on that road, which will cause a division and erosion in the middle of the way.
Also, it seems the bridges were not considered when the road was built as it’s almost giving way. Soon, commuters might either dip hands to touch the water or fall in.
Some of the villagers talked with on tour enlightened us about the state of the road before the construction.
Secondly, we looked at projects done at Umuasua Road, which is currently under construction with the drainage phase completed, Umuokugbu – Umuobiala Road and Ogboro – Eluama – Umuobiala Road in Isiukwuato. Nothing was indicating that NDDC was working on the road. As much as some streets were done, others were better left undone.
Some of the roads were abandoned already, even though it has not been completed.
Personally, I feel that whatever project attracted to a community or constituents should be appropriately checked. Some of these contractors use whatever they see to pour on the road and tell their superiors that the streets have been worked. You need to go to the site and confirm what they do for you as at the end of the day, your work speaks for you.
People will appraise you for the projects you attracted. So instead of quoting what you did for your people, why don’t you make sure the work is done correctly.
