The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress has called off its proposed nationwide indefinite strike which was scheduled to commence on October 3, stating that agreements have been reached to pay federal government workers N35,000 pending when a new minimum wage will be set.
Speaking after a meeting with the federal government on Monday, 2nd October 2023 revealed that a minimum wage will be inaugurated within one month.
It also disclosed that the Value Added Tax on diesel has been suspended for six months and the federal government agreed to vote N100 billion for the provision of high-capacity CNG buses for mass transit in the country.
In a statement signed by the NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo, asserted that several incentive measures will be put in place to cushion the effect of the removal of subsidy on petrol.
It said the federal government is committed to the provision of funds for Micro and Small Scale Enterprises and also to increase its initiatives to subsidize the distribution of fertilizers to farmers in the country.
They urged the State Government through the National Economic Council to implement wage awards to workers and similar consideration would also be given to the private sector and local government.
In that case, the proposed 30-day strike was called off and the parties were urged to abide by the dictates of the social dialogue.
