Minimum Wage: JAMB Issues Ultimatum to Bauchi Govt

The Bauchi State chapter of the Joint Action Committee of Academic and Non-Academic Staff Unions from several State-owned tertiary institutions has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the state government to implement the national minimum wage and address other demands.

The unions have raised concerns about certain deductions from their salaries and are also calling for a review of the new pension scheme, which requires civil servants to contribute 8% while the state government contributes 10%.

During a press briefing, the state’s JAC Chairman, Engineer Abubakar Ahmed, stated that if their demands are not met, they will have no choice but to initiate industrial action.

About 20 States have implemented the new minimum wage of N70,000 approved by the federal government led by President Bola Tinubu as of October 2024.

The monthly minimum wage was raised by 133% from 30,000 to 70,000 due to the economic situation in the country after months of negotiations with the Labour Unions.
